He goes on to link this idea to virtual reality and how an increasingly simulational culture transforms the identity of “originals and referentialities” (1995, p. 30). While still in their infancy, virtual reality programs attest to the increasing ‘duplication’, if I may use this term, of reality by technology. But the duplication incurs an alternation: virtual realities are fanciful imaginings that, in their difference from real reality, evoke play and discovery, instituting a new level of imagination.

For the most part, games have been criticised for their reluctance to engage with sexuality overall (Krzywinska 2012; Gallagher 2012). Although there are, of course, examples of games that have infolded sex into the plot to great effect – the Dragon Age series (BioWare 2009; 2011) taken as one such example – these games tend to be the exception rather than the rule. More common is for sex to be excluded from games, glossed over, or treated as a punchline. Mia Consalvo (2003), for example, points out the majority of romances represented in games follows a highly traditional fairytale model, in that heterosexual monogamy is the default, unexamined choice afforded to players.

He writes, “For what is at stake in these technical innovations, I contend, is Sex, Games, and Sex Games 23 not simply an increased ‘efficiency’ of interchange, enabling new avenues of investment, increased productivity at work and new domains of leisure and consumption, but a broad and extensive change in the culture, in the way identities are structured” (1995, p. 24). The idea that a change in medium of communication changes the ways in which identities are structured is of the utmost importance to erotic role-play.
